Every year on December 23, India observes National Farmers’ Day (Kisan Diwas) to commemorate the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh, the fifth Prime Minister of India and one of the most influential advocates of farmers’ rights in the country’s history. Revered as the “Messiah of Farmers”, Chaudhary Charan Singh dedicated his entire life to the upliftment of rural India, agrarian reforms, and the dignity of the farming community.

In recognition of his unparalleled contribution to the nation, the Government of India announced the conferment of the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian award, to Chaudhary Charan Singh in 2024, posthumously honoring his legacy.

His political and ideological heritage was carried forward by his son Ajit Singh, a prominent leader and Union Minister, who played a crucial role in shaping farmer-centric politics in western Uttar Pradesh. Today, his grandson Jayant Chaudhary, a Member of Parliament and Union Minister, continues to represent the aspirations of farmers and rural communities.
