New Delhi: In a major relief for Delhi’s vehicle owners, the government is preparing to waive off nearly 24.6 million pending traffic fines under a new Amnesty Scheme. The move aims to clear long-pending non-serious violations issued over the last ten years. The proposal has been sent by the Transport Department to the cabinet for approval.
Cabinet to Discuss Proposal
According to official sources, the proposal will be discussed in the upcoming cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. If approved, approximately 60–70% of all pending fines, amounting to around 24.6 million cases, will be waived.
Which Fines Are Included?
The Amnesty Scheme targets compoundable fines—those that can be settled outside of court. Serious offenses such as drunk driving, unauthorized driving, driving without a license, and rash driving are not included in this scheme.
Government Offers a Final Opportunity
The scheme will cover all non-serious pending fines from the last ten years up to October this year. The government intends to provide vehicle owners a final opportunity to clear their dues. Fines not settled within the scheme’s timeframe will not be eligible for any future waiver, and repeat defaulters may face cancellation of vehicle registration.
Pending Traffic Fines in Delhi
Currently, the Delhi Transport Department reports a total of 24,676,302 pending fines in the capital. The highest number of fines are with the Virtual Court (Notice Branch) at over 18.4 million, followed by Virtual Court (On the Spot) at 5.87 million, Digital Court at 1.66 lakh, Evening Court at 43,633, and Regular Court at around 1 lakh.
Most Common Violations
Data shows the highest pending fines are for riding without a helmet (over 2.59 lakh), followed by vehicles without PUC certificates (over 3.73 lakh), and driving without a license (over 2 lakh).
With this initiative, Delhi vehicle owners get a golden opportunity to clear long-standing fines and start afresh.
