Emails and Passwords of 680 Million Internet Users Leaked; MP State Cyber Police Issues Urgent Advisory

In a major cyber security alert, the Madhya Pradesh State Cyber Police has warned that the email IDs and passwords of nearly 680 million internet users across India are suspected to have fallen into the hands of cyber criminals. In view of the growing threat of data breaches and online fraud, the cyber police have urged users to immediately reset their passwords and strengthen account security.

According to the advisory issued by the State Cyber Police, the leaked credentials may be misused by hackers to gain unauthorized access to social media accounts, internet banking, digital wallets, and other sensitive online services, potentially leading to financial fraud and identity theft.

Cyber Police Issues Statewide Advisory

The cyber police stated that large volumes of user data are frequently leaked on the dark web and deep web, making ordinary internet users vulnerable. The advisory was issued as a preventive measure to alert citizens and minimize potential damage.

“If an email account is compromised, criminals can easily access multiple linked services,” the advisory noted, stressing the importance of immediate precautionary steps.

Use Different Passwords for Every Platform

State Cyber Superintendent of Police Pranay Nagvanshi emphasized that users should never use the same password for multiple websites or applications. “Each platform must have a unique password. Avoid clicking on suspicious emails, SMS messages, or unknown links,” he said.

He further advised users to refrain from logging into unknown apps or unverified websites, as such platforms often act as traps for stealing login credentials.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication

Cyber experts have strongly recommended enabling Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), which adds an extra layer of security beyond passwords. Users are also advised to create strong alphanumeric passwords containing a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.

Check if Your Email Was Compromised

To verify whether an email address has been part of a data breach, users may visit the internationally recognized website “Have I Been Pwned”, which allows individuals to check if their email IDs have appeared in known data leaks.

The cyber police have urged citizens to remain vigilant, stating that cyber safety begins with individual awareness and responsible online behavior.
