Good News for Rajasthan: Udaipur–Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Express Likely to Be Launched Soon

Udaipur:
Rail passengers in Rajasthan may soon have another reason to celebrate. Even as Indian Railways is operating special trains for Christmas, New Year, and winter holidays, a major update has emerged regarding high-speed rail connectivity. Rajasthan is likely to get a new Vande Bharat Express, proposed to run between Udaipur and Ahmedabad (Asarva), significantly enhancing travel convenience in the Mewar and southern Rajasthan region.

According to Chittorgarh MP and former Rajasthan BJP president C.P. Joshi, preparations at the railway level have already begun, and the official announcement of the Udaipur–Ahmedabad Vande Bharat could be made anytime. Speaking to the media in Udaipur, Joshi said the railway authorities are working rapidly on this route, and once operational, the train will provide a major boost to high-speed connectivity for the region.

Via Dungarpur to Ahmedabad

Joshi informed that the proposed Vande Bharat Express will operate from Udaipur to Ahmedabad via Dungarpur. In the initial phase, the train is expected to terminate at Asarva Railway Station, ahead of the world-class redevelopment of Ahmedabad’s Kalupur station. Once infrastructure upgrades are completed, further extensions may be considered.

He also added that work on a railway pit line in Chittorgarh is currently underway. After its completion, the Vande Bharat service may be extended up to Chittorgarh, offering direct benefits to passengers from the region. Efforts are also being made to introduce a direct train from Udaipur to Mumbai via Ahmedabad in the future.

Six Vande Bharat Trains Already Running in Rajasthan

At present, six Vande Bharat Express trains are operational in Rajasthan, connecting the state with major cities and economic hubs. These include routes between:

  • Ajmer and Chandigarh
  • Jodhpur and Sabarmati (Ahmedabad)
  • Udaipur and Jaipur
  • Udaipur and Agra Cantt
  • Bikaner and Delhi Cantt
  • Jodhpur and Delhi Cantt

These trains have significantly reduced travel time while offering passengers modern amenities and enhanced comfort, strengthening links between Rajasthan’s key cities, tourist destinations, and industrial regions.

PM Modi Flagged Off Three Trains in September

It is noteworthy that in September, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off three new Vande Bharat trains virtually during his visit to Banswara. These included the Bikaner–Delhi Cantt and Jodhpur–Delhi Cantt Vande Bharat services.

While Vande Bharat trains are known for their speed and advanced facilities, their higher fares compared to conventional trains have limited accessibility for some passengers, leading to relatively lower occupancy on certain routes.

Boost for Tourism and Trade

If the proposal materializes, the Udaipur–Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Express will emerge as a major rail milestone for Mewar and southern Rajasthan. It is expected to accelerate tourism, strengthen trade links, and improve overall mobility between Rajasthan and Gujarat.

As of now, Indian Railways has not issued an official notification, but expectations remain high that this new semi-high-speed train will soon become a reality for the region.
