Jalore, Rajasthan: The recent controversy over a purported “arbitrary order” by a local Panchayat in Jalore banning women from using smartphones appears to have been resolved. Amid mounting public opposition and widespread reactions on social media, the Panchayat leaders and village heads (Panch-Patels) announced the complete withdrawal of the controversial proposal.
Video Sparks Outrage
Over the past few days, a video from a meeting of the Chaudhary community Panchayat covering 15 villages in the Sundha Patti region went viral on social media. In the footage, Panchayat members were seen discussing a ban on women’s smartphone usage. The video immediately drew criticism, with many labeling it an attack on women’s personal freedoms and a reflection of outdated thinking. The issue quickly gained traction in both media and administrative circles.
Panchayat Leaders Clarify
Following the growing controversy, senior Panchayat leaders, including Sujanaram, clarified the situation. They stated that no such order was ever implemented. According to them, the suggestion emerged during a discussion initiated by some women concerned about children’s future. The proposal was meant for deliberation only and was scheduled for a final decision on January 26, 2026. There were no plans to enforce it immediately.
Reason Behind the Suggestion
The Panchayat representatives explained that the proposal was intended to address the negative impact of excessive smartphone use on children. Concerns included children spending too much time on games instead of studying, which could affect their eyesight and mental health, as well as rising cyber fraud incidents and exposure to inappropriate online content.
No Restriction on Education
The Panchayat emphasized that there was no intention to restrict daughters’ access to education. Smartphones would continue to be permitted for academic purposes at home. The main goal, they stated, was to promote discipline and awareness for the children’s better future.
Proposal Withdrawn After Public Pressure
The suggestion sparked widespread debate within and outside the community, with many deeming a blanket ban on communication devices inappropriate and unconstitutional. In response to the growing opposition and media attention, an emergency meeting was held by the Panchayat, which unanimously decided to withdraw the proposal to avoid any further confusion or controversy.
