Mumbai Metro 3 to Get Two New Pedestrian Subways Connecting Bullet Train Terminal and Racecourse

Mumbai: To enhance pedestrian connectivity on the recently launched Mumbai Metro Line 3, also known as the ‘Aqua Line’, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) has announced plans to construct two major subways. An agency will soon be appointed to prepare detailed project reports (DPR) and oversee project management during construction.

Subway Locations and Connectivity

The first proposed subway will connect Nehru Science Centre Metro Station in Worli to key locations including the Mahalaxmi Racecourse, Worli Promenade, and Nehru Planetarium. It will also link a new coastal road park and the upcoming commercial center being developed on the former Worli Dairy site. This subway is expected to be 1.6 kilometers long.

The second subway will link the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) Metro Station directly to the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train terminal, covering a length of 1.4 kilometers. This route will connect several important locations in the BKC area, establishing the region as a key interchange hub for commuters.

Total Subway Length and DPR Plans

Combined, the two pedestrian subways will span over 3 kilometers. MMRCL Director R. Ramna stated that an agency will soon be appointed to prepare the DPR for the subways. The same agency will also serve as the project management consultant during construction.

Redevelopment of Worli Dairy Site

A crucial element of this plan is the Worli Dairy site, which is expected to be opened for commercial development following government approvals. The Urban Development Department will make the necessary amendments in the Development Control and Promotion Regulations (DCPR) to allow commercial use. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has already been appointed as the planning authority for this area, which is likely to accelerate the redevelopment and construction work.

These subways are expected to significantly boost pedestrian convenience and integrate Metro 3 seamlessly with Mumbai’s upcoming infrastructure projects, including the bullet train.
