Bangladesh in Political Turmoil: Awami League Protests Against Muhammad Yunus, Sheikh Hasina’s Gold Seized

Dhaka: Bangladesh is witnessing intense political unrest as the ruling Awami League launches nationwide protests against interim government head Muhammad Yunus. The party is demanding Yunus’s resignation, labeling him as an illegitimate, fascist ruler. The unrest follows a controversial verdict from the International Crimes Tribunal, which recently sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death—a ruling rejected by the Awami League as politically motivated.

Nationwide Protests Erupt
The Awami League claims that Muhammad Yunus is plotting to bar Sheikh Hasina and her party from participating in next year’s general elections. The party has accused Yunus of orchestrating political conspiracies to suppress democratic voices. Since November 17, when the International Crimes Tribunal handed down the death sentence to Sheikh Hasina, the Awami League has actively mobilized supporters, organizing protests and rallies across the country.

In a public statement, the Awami League denounced Yunus as a “murderer and fascist” who is attempting to prevent the party from contesting elections. The party called the tribunal’s decision illegal and politically motivated, vowing to reject it entirely. Grassroots mobilization has intensified, with the Awami League reaching out to citizens nationwide to counter what it terms Yunus’s anti-national machinations.

Government Seizes Sheikh Hasina’s Gold
Amid the political chaos, Muhammad Yunus’s interim government has reportedly seized two of Sheikh Hasina’s lockers, uncovering 9.7 kilograms of gold jewelry. The seizure was carried out under judicial authorization, with the National Board of Revenue’s Central Intelligence Cell and the Anti-Corruption Commission conducting a joint investigation. A magistrate oversaw the opening of the lockers linked to the former Prime Minister.

The political standoff has significantly escalated tensions in Bangladesh, with the Awami League vowing to continue its nationwide campaign to challenge Yunus’s authority and restore Sheikh Hasina’s political rights.
